Note:
Ground source heat pumps provide a source of low-grade heat that can be used to heat buildings, avoiding the use of fossil fuels (if the electricity is sourced from a renewable source!). They are suitable for a wide variety of building types and are particularly appropriate for low-environmental-impact projects. They can be installed in most of Europe, using a borehole or shallow trenches or, less commonly, by extracting heat from a pond or lake. The main interest at the present time is the extremely high energy efficiency of these devices.
