Definition:
"Offences relating to the improper influencing of people in certain positions of trust. The offences commonly grouped under this expression are now statutory." [UK]
Definition reference:
Oxford Dictionary of Law, 6th Ed. (2006) OUP, p. 132
Note:
Background to the Offences
.
Corruption is not defined in UK law, but rather is used customarily as an umbrella term for a number of other offences. In particular, given its usual connocations, the term bribery can be said to be synonymous with corruption given that the Bribery Act 2010 replaced the statutory offences of corruption that were covered by the now repealed Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act 1889, Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 and the Prevention of Corruption Act 1916.
.
The Bribery Act 2010 introduces two general bribery offences, namely the offence of bribing another and the offence of being bribed, and two specific offences relating to bribing a foreign public official and the failure of commercial organisation to prevent bribery. [20.02.2017]

"The Act is concerned with bribery. Very generally, this is defined as giving someone a financial or other advantage to encourage that person to perform their functions or activities improperly or to reward that person for having already done so. So this could cover seeking to influence a decision-maker by giving some kind of extra benefit to that decision maker rather than by what can legitimately be offered as part of a tender process."
